Ellen’s Stardust Diner

So, as you probably already know – My handsome husband, Chris, and I went to down to New York City for a quick little getaway this past weekend.  After we gave it some thought, we ended up deciding to make the three-hour drive down on Saturday morning rather than spending the money on a hotel room for Friday night since we wouldn’t have gotten in until late.

We were up and out the door by 6 am on Saturday morning and after a few stops for coffee, gas and bathroom breaks, were all checked in to the hotel by 10 am – so we basically had the whole day in the city.

For those of you who may not know, Chris is a Tax Accountant, and he’s been wanting to visit the Museum of American Finance forever, so that was actually our first stop of the day (after checking in to the hotel, of course).   To say that he was in his glory would be a complete understatement.

Did you notice the Gryffindor scarf?

So anyways……

Chris’s brother and his wife live in Astoria (a neighborhood in Queens), so we had made plans to meet them for lunch at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, which is located at 1650 Broadway @ 51st Street.

Have you ever heard of it?  It’s a restaurant, fairly close to Times Square, with singing waitstaff.  I actually hadn’t heard of it until recently.  A friend of mine was thinking about taking her kids there when she goes down in a few months, and she told me about it.  I thought it sounded like fun – so that’s how we ended up there for lunch.

We waited a good half hour for a table (we arrived around 1:30 pm), but when we walked by the restaurant again later that night, the line was around the corner, so I imagine the wait was at least an hour (but probably even longer).

The waitstaff was utterly amazing.  In between serving us our food and drinks, they all took turns singing show tunes and top 40 hits.   The thing was, there were no breaks in the singing – at all, and it was loud – which made it nearly impossible to have a conversation while we were in there.

As for the food, I don’t think one of the four of us was impressed.  I got a chicken caesar salad, which was small and honestly – just ok.  Chris got a grilled cheese sandwich that came out burnt, my brother-in-law got a tuna burger, which he said wasn’t that good and I am 99% that my sister-in-law disliked hers (it was some kind of a funky salad), but since I couldn’t hear anything she said, I am not 100% sure on that one.

Overall, it was a really fun experience, but would I go back again?  No.
