Weekend in Newport

This past weekend, Chris and I went on an impromptu mini getaway (just one night) to Newport, RI.  We haven’t been there since we did the Newport Ghost Tour about a year ago, so we figured that we were due for a visit.

Our first stop was the Rosecliff Mansion.  In case you’re unfamiliar, there are 11 historic properties that make up the Newport Mansions.  The Gilded Age mansions are all restored “summer cottages” (imagine??)  that belonged to some of America’s wealthiest families during the 1800s and early 1900s (think the Vanderbilt’s).  Chris and I have each toured a few of the other mansions at different times, but the Rosecliff Mansion was one that neither of us had been to yet.

The mansion was gorgeous.  I mean absolutley stunning. The arcitecture was absolutely amazing and I’m going to tell you more about it in a separate post.

That’s a picture of the back of the house by the way.

After the tour, we were starving, so we stopped for lunch right after.  We found ourselves at this place called La Forge, which was ok – but I was so hungry I was pretty close to eating Chris’s arm off by that point.  Yeah, it was just ok.

After we ate, we decided to walk around for a while.  There are tons of little shops and boutiques in Newport, but had to make a pit stop immediately when we walked upon the Newport Cookie Company.  HOLY CRAP – I was in my glory inside this place, believe me.

They had tons of varieties of different cookies there.  They sold the cookies in different quantities, but Chris & I decided to get three for $3.95 so that we could each have one and then split the other. Chris got a s’mores cookie, we split a chocolate peanut butter chip cookie and I got my favorite – a peanut butter cookie.

They were all to die for.  After we walked away, I wished I had gotten more for the road.  There’s always next time, right?

After we did some shopping and lots of eating, it was time to head to our hotel and check in.  We ended up staying at the Navy Lodge on the Newport Naval Base and since my hubby is a military man, we got a great deal on a room there.

We had evening reservations for a ghost tour at Belecourt Castle (in the same neighborhood as the Mansions), but before that we grabbed a quick dinner at The Wharf Pub, which is on Bowens Wharf.  It was close by all the shops, right on the water and the food was pretty decent – as far as pub food goes.

I am going to tell you about the ghost tour, also in a separate post, because I definitely have opinions about that one……

Have you ever been to Newport?  If so, what was your favorite part?
